Hospital Infection Rate May Be Going Down

Comments Off

Beginning October 1, 2008 hospital acquired infections may start going down. That is when the new Medicare rules go into effect denying payment to hospitals for hospital acquired infections that could have been prevented.

For years now we have seen an increase in hospital acquired infections. Congress is trying to do something about this by saying, if you let a patient become infected while staying in your hospital; we are not going to pay for it like we have been doing in the past.

I think this is a tremendous step in the right direction; to make the negligent person or hospital assume the responsibility for the harm they cause rather than let the government pay for the harm.

Often if a patient gets MRSA while hospitalized the treatment can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. We expect to see much litigation in the future about this kind of preventable infection.
